Hunger is a pressing challenge in our community. In Wisconsin, 1 in 8 children experiences hunger, and in Milwaukee County nearly 1 in 5 households struggles with food insecurity. In the City of Milwaukee, more than 1 in 4 children face daily food insecurity.
Just One More Ministry (JOMM), based in Glendale, rescues excess food from restaurants, caterers, and suppliers, and redistributes it to shelters, food pantries, and families in need. With their regular food streams disrupted, JOMM is turning to the community for support. Bagged lunches are especially helpful because they are simple to prepare, easy to distribute, and can be delivered quickly to those who need them most.
Activities
Children and caregivers will enjoy a read-aloud of Maddi’s Fridge to help the kids understand the importance of the lunches they will be packing. Next, we will assemble bagged lunches that include:
- – A sandwich (meat and cheese slices, no condiments, wrapped in a plastic ziplock)
- – A piece of fruit
- – Chips
- – A treat
- – An inspirational note
Impact
This project will support residents across Greater Milwaukee who are struggling with hunger and help children learn about food insecurity in an age-appropriate way. We will show kids that their small hands and big hearts can make a real difference in their community.
