Plastic in the ocean and our waterways is a local and global issue. Join KIC Junior Leader Ayan and his robotics team, The Syntax of Smart, to learn about the robot they built to remove pollution from lakes and oceans. Their team is a part of First Tech Challenge – an STEM-focused organization that invites kids ages 12-18 to program, design and build and compete with robots.

Activities

Participants will listen to a presentation by Ayan’s Syntax of Smart Robotics Team showcasing what they do as a robotics team. Your family will learn how the robot works and even interact with the robot.

Next, you’ll have the opportunity to make a difference by repurposing plastic grocery bags to keep them out of the landfill and our waterways! The robotics team will teach you how to use the bags to make plarn, a plastic yarn. All of the plarn made at this session will be donated to Mercy Mats of West Allis to crochet into cushy sleeping mats to be distributed by Repairers of the Breach – Milwaukee’s only daytime homeless resource center.

Impact

Outreach is a very big part of robotics and really helps the team share robotics with the community. Kids will also make plarn to help make sleeping mats for the unhoused community and make sure they are supported.

Junior Leader Program

KIC invites more youth leaders (ages 9-14) to create service opportunities to engage their peers and work on solutions in the community. If you know of a motivated youth who has an idea to make a positive contribution to our community, please have them learn more and complete a Junior Leader application.
