This project will put little hands to work to support the bunnies at the Wisconsin Humane Society! Together we will transform toilet paper tubes into hay feeders for the rabbits living at the Humane Society. These hay feeders will also be used by the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center located there.
The feeders aren’t just fun to make–they’re important for bunny health. Rabbits need constant access to things to chew in order to keep their teeth strong and properly trimmed, since their teeth are always growing. In addition, these cute feeders will make mealtime more enriching and engaging for our furry friends, while stimulating their natural instincts to forage.
Activities
We will kick off our time together with a story to understand the importance of helping animals. Next, we will get to work making bunny hay feeders out of upcycled toilet paper tubes. This project is ideal for our youngest kids. They will practice scissor skills by making a fringe on each end of the toilet paper tube and then stuffing it full of Timothy Hay.
We also invite all of our attending families to consider bringing an item from the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wish List to donate! Your kids will love shopping for the animals!
Impact
This project offers a wonderful way for our young volunteers to practice kindness, build empathy, learn about animal care and make a difference in the community–one bunny at a time! It also supports the Humane Society by providing a generous supply of enrichment items, easing the cost of care, staff time and showing the animals a little extra love while they wait for their forever homes.
