This summer, KIC is launching its inaugural KIC Connects Summer Service Series which includes monthly service projects uniting KIC families with youth served by Hope Street Ministry.
Join us at Shechem community center for our FIRST service session!
Many KIC volunteers come from the suburban greater Milwaukee area, while Hope Street Ministry is in central Milwaukee’s 53206 zip code. By bridging geographic and social divides, we hope to empower young volunteers to feel connected, capable, and confident.
These hands-on service projects also teach essential life skills including communication, problem-solving, leadership, teamwork, and a strong work ethic – equipping youth to become engaged citizens in their community.
In addition to our service project, we will include social activities for the youth to play, laugh and enjoy summertime fun together!
Activities
We will start each session with an introductory game and/or get-to-know you activity. Then we will do some learning together about the specific service project we will engage in together. After this, we will do a service project together.
Projects may include one of the following:
-
- – Welcome Baskets: Assemble and deliver baskets to celebrate members’ achievements, welcome new residents, and provide hygiene kits for Shechem youth.
- – Creative Acts of Kindness: Organize baking, crafting, and card-making to spread joy within the housing community.
- – Inclusion: Partner with The Ability Center to bring wheelchair basketball to the community, promoting inclusive play and engagement.
- – Adoption Gifts Project: Create adoption cards to accompany stuffed animals for distribution during adoption ceremonies, making these milestones even more special.
After our service project, the youth volunteers will have social time to connect and have fun with one another. It’s a powerful way to cultivate a sense of belonging, dignity, and joy within our community!
Impact
At this KIC Family Project, we intend to:
-
- – Deepen Family & Community Connections: By engaging children in positive activities, we create spaces where families can bond and connect with others.
- – Increase Engagement in Positive Activities: Youth will engage throughout the summer in unique service projects, nurturing confidence and reinforcing a culture of kindness and mutual support.
- – Increase Access to Essential Resources: Assembling hygiene kits for Shechem kids, providing meals, and creating welcome baskets directly meets basic needs such as food, health, and childcare resources for families.
- – Promote Community Connectedness & Safety: Group service projects bring people together, strengthening trust and fostering a safe, inclusive environment.
- – Celebrate the Power of Arts & Creativity: Whether through baking or crafting for others, creative expression will play a vital role in reinforcing a sense of belonging.
