Fill a Sweet Dreams Pillowcase for youth living temporarily at The Cathedral Center’s emergency shelter. Many homeless families in Milwaukee are transient, living in cars, hotels, or staying with friends or family members. The ongoing stress around housing uncertainty can lead to an increase in mental health problems among children, including anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues.
The Cathedral Center works to provide a safe environment for unaccompanied women and families with children experiencing homelessness. Through an emergency shelter and a flexible housing program, The Cathedral Center provides a space for our community’s most insecure to heal and receive the workforce development and other services they need to set and achieve goals to regain independence.
Activities
Invite your kiddos to go shopping or encourage them to ask friends and family to collect the following items to fill their Sweet Dreams pillowcase:
-
- Blanket (crib size or smaller; must be new)
- Stuffed Animal (medium size that can still fit in a standard pillowcase; must be new)
- Book (age-appropriate children’s book to encourage reading and family bonding)
- A note/card
Handmade pillowcases will be provided. The pillowcases were made with love by a KIC kid’s Grandma!
Impact
These Sweet Dreams Pillowcases will offer reliable comfort and support emotional well-being for children staying at the Cathedral Center during a time of housing transition. Your children will have the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of housing insecurity and learn that they are so very capable of supporting others in our broader community!
