Hunger is a pressing challenge in our community. In Wisconsin, 1 in 8 children experiences hunger, and The Dept. of Public Instruction estimates that there are about 11,000 children who suffer from food insecurity in Waukesha County alone.
Join Sussex Outreach Services for a meaningful storytime centered on food insecurity, curated for our young changemakers (ages 0–12).
Activities
Children and caregivers will enjoy a read-aloud of Maddi’s Fridge to help everyone understand the importance of the lunches they will be packing. Together, the families will assemble bagged lunches that include:
- – A sandwich (meat and cheese slices, no condiments, wrapped in a plastic ziplock)
- – A piece of fruit (orange/clemetine, banana, or apple)
- – Chips
- – A treat
- – An inspirational note
Impact
This project will support residents across Greater Milwaukee who are struggling with hunger and help children learn about food insecurity in an age-appropriate way. We will show kids that their small hands and big hearts can make a real difference in their community.
