MLK Virtual National Day of Service Event

January 16 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Join KIC for a virtual all-ages celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, including a special guest reader Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, engaging story time, and music and movement breaks. On this National Day of Service, we will engage our children as dynamic and change-making citizens in an on-the-spot service project: a diaper and wipes collection for Milwaukee Diaper Mission.

Activities

It’s never too early to talk to our kids about race and the Civil Rights Movement. By 6 months of age, babies are noticing racial differences. By age 4, children have begun to show signs of racial bias. We have invited Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson to read a book that brings Martin Luther King, Jr. to life in a way that even the youngest children can understand.

We will hear from Milwaukee Diaper Mission leaders and learn about diaper poverty. The kids will then be invited to participate in a Diaper Dash: raiding the closet for diapers and wipes to donate to Milwaukee Diaper Mission. (You may wish to pre-stock your closets with diapers and wipes to donate.)

Diapers are a necessity to ensure healthy children, yet one in three U.S. families experience diaper needs. Milwaukee Diaper Mission, in partnership with local social service agencies, empowers families in need by providing a reliable source of free diapers and period supplies.

Drop off your donations at designated homes throughout the week. Or register to join us on Jan. 20 or 21 to pack diapers at the warehouse and deliver your donations directly to MDM!

Lachrisa Grandberry, a proud and loud professional actor and teaching artist with a huge smile, will also be guiding our kiddos through some music and movement breaks throughout the event!

Highlights:

  • Storytime with Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson
  • Music and movement with actor Lachrisa Grandberry
  • Thoughtful discussion
  • On-the-spot service project – Diaper Dash
