Meal Kits for Food Pantries: Green Salads

What’s for dinner? Deciding what to put on the table can be overwhelming – it requires some planning, getting
the essential ingredients, having the right tools, and spending time in the kitchen. While food pantries offer
access to foods and ingredients, preparing a complete nutritious and tasty meal can be challenging for
communities experiencing food insecurity. Meal kits include all the ingredients and cooking instructions. It offers
the communities an easy way to enjoy a complete, wholesome meal, as well as providing an opportunity to try a
new recipe!

Purpose: Help communities experiencing food insecurity create a satisfying and nutritious meal!
Impact: In addition to helping communities in need, children can participate in the decision process and learn
what goes into a meal and the importance of nutritious foods!

Activities: Your family will be Blue Apron or HelloFresh to food pantries and provide ingredients for recipients to
cook a meal at home! This month we will provide the green salad meal kits for Food is Free MKE. Your family
will assemble your desired quantity of meal kits. You will pick up the meal kit bags and the cooking instructions (to
be included in the kit) from Shorewood. Each family is responsible to provide at least 3 different salad
ingredients. You can simply provide your favorite salad ingredients, or use the ingredient list on the cooking
instruction as your shopping list! Please drop off the meal kits at an agreed upon time. KIC will include spring
mix, oil, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper in the bags before delivering to Food is Free MKE. Additionally, KIC
will provide participating families with some materials and reflection questions to encourage a discussion about
food insecurity and nutrition at home!

Materials: The meal kit is intended for a family of four. For each meal kit, you will be responsible for supplying at
least 3 different salad ingredients. Below is a list of possible ingredients for reference.● Apples
● Avocados
● Bell peppers
● Carrots
● Chickpeas
● Cucumber
● Croutons
● Dried fruits
● Grape tomatoes
● Nuts or seeds
● Red onion

When and Where:
Materials pick-up: July 15 to 24 (alternate dates can be arranged with project leader).
Meal Kits drop off: July 15 to 26 (alternate dates can be arranged with project leader).
Pick-up/Drop-off: Shorewood. Specific addresses will be provided via email once registration is completed.

Cancellations: Please contact shaine@kicmke.org asap in the event of a cancellation so we can add waitlisted
families to the event.

Participant Cap: 12 kits. Please specify how many meal kits your family would like to put together when
registering. A follow-up email will be sent out to confirm the requested number of kits and provide more

Age: All ages welcome! Older kids can help choose the ingredients while little kids can help assemble the meal

Cost: Salad ingredients, about $10 to $15.
