Books for Kids – Next Door MKE

September 8 - September 25

Are you clearing off your shelves to make way for new reading materials? Has your little one outgrown some of their board books? Is your big kid ready for chapter books and no longer needs those easy readers? Consider taking an hour or two to collect gently used books to donate to Next Door MKE

Description of Event: As an award-winning early education provider, Next Door focuses on improving literacy and school readiness for children ages 0–5 in Milwaukee’s central city. Next Door’s Books for Kids program has utilized book donations for 30 years to support its students, their families and Milwaukee teachers. Children can demonstrate kindness and generosity by finding and donating books they can share with other children in our community.

According to Next Door’s website, “Research shows that the number of books available to a child may surpass all other variables in predicting their long-term success in school. Since the program started in 1990, Next Door’s Books for Kids program has collected and distributed more than 2 million books to Next Door students and children across Milwaukee.”

Purpose: We will collect books for Books for Kids – Next Door MKE. High needs books include:

  1. Board books and picture books targeted to children (infants to five years old),
  2. Multicultural and multilingual books to represent the children they teach, and
  3. Social emotional books to help children understand their feelings.

We will also collect books for elementary, middle and high school children, as well as books targeted for adults, which will be distributed through Next Door Community and Little Free Libraries.

Impact: We hope that all of the children participating will grow in awareness of their capability to help others and be mindful of ways to share quality stories and the love of reading with other children.

Activities: Collect gently used books from your shelves at home. Donation boxes will be set out near front doors during on Monday, September 8th through Friday, September 25th between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm.
