Art Kits for Caring Kids

June 5 - June 20

Coronavirus has left so many of our elderly community members feeling alone due to needing to be isolated from others for their health and safety. Our playgroups at their facilities have been cancelled indefinitely and they miss seeing our kids’ happy faces while having fun, playing games and doing crafts. Artwork created by our kids and photos of them can bring great joy in what can feel like dark times. So many of our kids enjoy doing art projects…now they can hang on someone else’s wall to make them smile.

Help bring joy to our “grandfriends” living in skilled nursing facilities and assisted living facilities throughout the Milwaukee area by having your children make artwork provided in our “Art Kits for Caring Kids”.

Purpose: We will provide artwork for residents of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities to decorate for the season. Children will create artwork provided in the art kits. The residents would also love to see a printed photo of the child either doing the art project or just of their smiling face.

Impact: Children will learn that something they create can bring joy to others.

Activity: Your child or children will complete 3 projects using the materials supplied by KIC in the art kit for the base and your own art and craft supplies to add their own personal touch to it. The recipients of the artwork would love to receive a photo of your child(ren) to accompany their artwork if you are comfortable with that.

You will pick up a storage bag that will contain supplies for three projects. Details of the projects and pictures of examples of completed projects will be provided in the follow up email you will receive after signing up. The projects will be given to the recipients in July.

JUNE PROJECTS are a paper plate stars and stripes wreath, a painted fireworks craft, and a fingerpainted American flag (photos included in follow-up email). Participants will need to supply their own washable paints, markers, and glue to complete the projects. If families are in need of glue, markers, or paint to complete the projects, they can contact Kristin, the project leader, and KIC can provide these items.

Participants are encouraged to add any of their own special touches to the projects to make them unique and special in ways that only kids can! We loved to see the kids’ creativity with each month’s art projects!

When and Where: You get to assemble at your own home.

Your family will pick up a prepared Art Kit from the front porch box at 5524 N Diversey Blvd., Whitefish Bay between the dates of June 5th and 13th between the hours of 10:00 am and 9:00 pm.

Return completed artwork in the storage bag to the same address any time before 6:00 pm on June 20th. Projects can be turned in any day between pick up and June 20th (do not need to be returned on June 20th).

Participant Cap: We will have 20 Art Kits prepared for June. If you are unable to get one of the KIC Art Kits, feel free to create any of your own artwork and drop off in Kristin’s porch box by June 20th. Indicate  how many art kits you would like during registration. A follow-up email will be sent out to confirm the requested number of kits and provide more information on/photos of the art projects.

Age: All ages!

Cost: Free

Registration: Available here

Materials: Scissors, glue, paint (red, white, and blue needed this month), and crayons/markers. Use your own craft supplies at home to enhance your projects. Creativity is encouraged! If your family would like to participate but is in need of glue or paint, please let Kristin know after receiving the follow-up email and KIC can supply your family with these materials, also.

Questions:  Please contact Kristin at kristin@kicmke.org with any questions.

More information: The art projects will be distributed by Operation Sunshine. Operation Sunshine was started in March of 2020 by two sisters as a way to support their community. “The purpose of Operation Sunshine is to bring some “sunshine,” encouragement, love and support to our elderly community, primarily in nursing homes and long term care facilities (but also isolated at home). Our main goal with Operation Sunshine is to support and encourage the nursing home and long term care facility residents. We deliver art to facilities all over SE Wisconsin. If residents are able to come out of their rooms, we deliver a large stack of art to line the hall ways and common areas. If residents are confined to their rooms, we then deliver a piece of art and a handwritten note to each resident. We put a little sticker and a picture of a kid from the community on each piece of art. We have found this makes it a little more personal. We have also delivered more than 2000 masks, painted rocks, “jewelry” made by little ones and so much more. We deliver whatever we can get that might bring a little light to someone’s day.”
